Coach, shared shuttle, private transfer or taxi? Prices and journey times for 12 airport-to-ski-resort routes in winter 2026/27, the cheapest options and when a private minibus beats shuttle seats.
Ski transfer prices for winter 2026/27 range from a few euros on public transport to several hundred for a private minibus, and the cheapest airport-to-resort routes in our 12 guides are in Bulgaria and Austria: Sofia to Borovets by coach via Samokov for €4.50–5, Innsbruck to the Tyrol resorts by bus F (€3.30) and train, and Sofia to Bansko by coach for around €12–14. The dearest are long Swiss and French runs by taxi, such as Geneva to Chamonix at roughly CHF 330–380 on the meter. For most families and groups of four or more, a private transfer priced per vehicle ends up close to, or below, the cost of individual shuttle seats.
Ski transfer prices compared: 12 routes for 2026/27
Figures come from our individual guides (October 2026). “Around” means a typical or recently reported fare rather than an official one. Private transfers are priced per vehicle and quoted by each company for your dates, so only one guide (Pamporovo) has a published reference price.

Cheapest ski transfers: the budget routes
If price matters more than time, these are the lowest fares in our guides, all on scheduled public transport or coaches:
- Innsbruck Airport to the Tyrol resorts: bus F to Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof costs €3.30 (IVB 2026 fare), then an ÖBB train and a resort bus. Allow about 1.5–2.5 hours depending on the resort. See Innsbruck Airport transfers.
- Sofia Airport to Borovets: a coach from Sofia to Samokov costs €4.50–5, plus a local connection; a direct coach to Borovets runs a couple of times in the morning for around €7.
- Sofia Airport to Bansko: metro €0.80 plus a coach for around €12–14, but four hours or more in total.
- Sofia Airport to Pamporovo: a single morning coach for around €16, which rarely fits a flight.
- Geneva Airport to Chamonix: FlixBus from about €20, around 1 hour 25 minutes, at least four a day.
- Belgrade Airport to Kopaonik: free city bus plus an early-morning coach for around RSD 2,890 (≈ €25).
- Geneva and Lyon to the Tarentaise: Altibus from €47 (Geneva) and €55 (Lyon, Friday to Sunday only).
The catch with budget routes is timing. Several run once or twice a day, mainly in the morning, which suits travellers who spend a night in the city first rather than those landing in the afternoon. With skis, boots and a suitcase, changes between airport bus, train and resort bus also take time.
Shared vs private ski transfer: the maths for groups of 4, 6 and 8
A shared shuttle charges per seat; a private transfer charges per vehicle. The simple test: multiply the per-seat fare by the number of people in your group. If a private quote for a car or minibus is lower than that total, the private transfer is cheaper as well as quicker, with no waiting for other flights and no stops at other hotels.
| Route (shared fare per seat) | 4 people | 6 people | 8 people |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sofia → Borovets (around €11–14) | €44–56 | €66–84 | €88–112 |
| Sofia → Bansko (around €23–28) | €92–112 | €138–168 | €184–224 |
| Salzburg → Saalbach / Zell am See (from €29) | from €116 | from €174 | from €232 |
| Munich → Kitzbühel (“Budget Class” from €39) | from €156 | from €234 | from €312 |
| Geneva → Tarentaise by Altibus coach (from €47) | from €188 | from €282 | from €376 |
| Lyon → Val Thorens with Ben’s Bus (£53 ≈ €61) | £212 (≈ €244) | £318 (≈ €366) | £424 (≈ €488) |
These are the totals a private quote has to beat; the “from” fares are the lowest advertised, so real seat prices on peak Saturdays are often higher. Children’s fares (for example 30% off for ages 3–12 on Altibus) lower the shared total for families.
A worked example with real figures – Pamporovo: booking sites show private transfers from Sofia Airport from around €175 for a car and around €215 for an 8-seat minibus. For four people in a car that is about €44 each; for eight in a minibus about €27 each. The coach is cheaper at around €16 plus the metro, but it leaves once a day at 08:00, so most groups arriving by air end up booking a car.
Another one – the last leg from Moûtiers: Les 3 Vallées quotes about €12 per adult on the bus from Moûtiers station to the resorts, or approximate taxi fares for 1–4 people of €65 to Méribel Centre, €75 to Courchevel and €110 to Val Thorens. Four people in a taxi to Val Thorens pay about €27.50 each against €48 on the bus.
In general, one or two travellers are almost always better off on a coach or shared shuttle. From four people, ask for a private quote for the whole group; from six to eight, a minibus is usually the best value per person and keeps everyone and the ski bags together.
Route by route
Bulgaria: Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo
All three start at Sofia Airport, where shared shuttles to Bansko and Borovets leave from Terminals 1 and 2 at fixed times in season. Borovets is the shortest run at about 1 h 15 min; Pamporovo is far enough (about 230 km) that Plovdiv Airport, around 80 km away, is worth checking, with private transfers from around €85. Compare companies on Sofia Airport transfers and the resort pages for Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo. Guides: Bansko, Borovets, Pamporovo.
Serbia: Kopaonik
Belgrade to Kopaonik is about 290 km and four hours in good conditions; the coach takes over five. Niš Airport is closer (around 125 km), but check winter 2026/27 flights. See Belgrade Airport transfers, Kopaonik transfers and the Kopaonik guide.
France via Geneva and Lyon
Chamonix is the short hop from Geneva; the Tarentaise resorts (Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens, Tignes, Val d’Isère, Les Arcs) are 2–3.5 hours from either Geneva or Lyon. See Geneva Airport transfers, Lyon Airport transfers, and the resort pages for Chamonix, Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens, Tignes and Les Arcs. Not sure which airport to choose? Our comparison of Geneva, Lyon and Chambéry for the French resorts covers distances and times from each.
Austria: Tyrol, Saalbach and Kitzbühel
Innsbruck and Salzburg are compact airports close to the resorts; Munich has more flights but adds an hour or more. Resort pages: St. Anton, Ischgl, Sölden, Mayrhofen, Saalbach, Zell am See and Kitzbühel; airports: Salzburg Airport and Munich Airport.
Switzerland: Zermatt, St. Moritz and Davos
Swiss resorts are the one place where the train is often the easiest option as well as a reasonable price, because Zurich Airport has its own station and Zermatt is car-free (cars and transfers stop at Täsch). See Zurich Airport transfers, Zermatt, St. Moritz and Davos.
Saturday transfer day: why the same trip can take twice as long
Most chalets and apartments across the Alps change over on Saturdays, so the airports, motorways and valley roads are at their busiest then, especially at Christmas, New Year, the February half-terms and Easter. Notable bottlenecks in our guides:
- Tarentaise (Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens, Tignes, Les Arcs): the single valley road between Albertville and Moûtiers is one of the busiest routes in the Alps on peak weekends; Les 3 Vallées recommends Sunday-to-Sunday stays.
- Kufstein district, Tyrol: last winter, driving bans applied on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 07:00 to 19:00 (20 December 2025 to 6 April 2026); check the 2026/27 dates.
- Saalbach and Zell am See: the B311 and the Lofer route carry heavy holiday traffic on changeover days.
- Bansko: plan to leave at least four hours before your flight, more on a Saturday or in snow.
Shared shuttles also wait for several flights on Saturdays, so allow extra time for both. Some private transfer companies add a Saturday or night supplement; ask when you book.
How we compiled these prices
All figures come from our 12 ski transfer guides, researched in October 2026. Where official 2026/27 fares were published (Altibus, IVB, MVV, the Swiss vignette) we used them. Where only marketplace listings, operator adverts or last season’s fares were available, the guides say “around” or “from”, and we kept that wording here. Taxi figures are either calculated from the official tariff (Geneva) or reported fares (Bansko), never official quotes. Private transfer prices are not regulated and vary with vehicle size, date and time, so treat the table as a starting point and ask companies for a quote for your exact dates. Winter timetables are usually confirmed in December, so check again before you travel.
Tips for booking a ski transfer
- Count the ski bags: tell the company how many ski and board bags you have; a car for four people may not take four sets of skis.
- Child seats: request them when you book; coaches and taxis from the rank rarely carry them.
- Late flights: most coaches and shared shuttles will not wait long for a delayed flight. Check the waiting policy, or pre-book a private transfer that tracks your flight.
- Driving yourself: Switzerland’s motorway vignette costs CHF 40; Austria’s is digital-only from 1 December 2026; Bulgaria’s e-vignette starts at €5.30. Winter tyres or chains are required on mountain roads in season.
- Book Saturdays early: peak Saturday shuttle seats and minibuses sell out first.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a ski transfer cost?
In our 12 guides, public transport costs from a few euros (bus F from Innsbruck Airport is €3.30 plus train) and shared shuttles from around €11–14 per seat (Sofia to Borovets) to €29–39 in Austria. Private transfers are priced per vehicle; for Sofia to Pamporovo, booking sites show from around €175 for a car.
What is the cheapest ski transfer from Geneva Airport?
To Chamonix, FlixBus from about €20 one way is the cheapest option. To Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens and the other Tarentaise resorts, the Altibus coach costs from €47 for adults in winter 2026/27.
Is a shared or private ski transfer cheaper?
For one or two people a shared shuttle or coach is usually cheaper. For groups of four or more, multiply the per-seat fare by the number of people: a private quote for one vehicle often matches or beats that total and avoids waiting for other flights.
How long is the transfer from Geneva Airport to Val Thorens?
Allow around 2.5 to 3.5 hours by road depending on traffic; Altibus quotes about 2 hours from Geneva Airport to Moûtiers, and the resorts are up to an hour further up the mountain. Saturdays in peak weeks can take much longer.
How much is a shared transfer from Sofia Airport to Bansko?
Recent fares for the scheduled shared shuttle from Sofia Airport to Bansko are around €23–28 per seat, for a journey of about 2 hours 40 minutes to 3.5 hours. The coach from Sofia is cheaper at around €12–14 but takes four hours or more including the metro.
Is it cheaper to take the train from Zurich Airport to Zermatt?
For one or two people, usually yes: a full-fare 2nd-class ticket is around CHF 130 (about €140), about half with a Half Fare Card, and Saver Day Passes start from CHF 52. For a group of four or more, a private transfer to Täsch plus the shuttle train can come close to the combined train fares.
