Borovets lies in the Rila mountains about 10 km above the town of Samokov. From Sofia the usual route leaves the city on Samokovsko Shose, the road south past Pancharevo lake and the Iskar reservoir, then climbs from Samokov to the resort. The ring road route is about 58 km and roughly an hour’s drive to the Yastrebets gondola; from the airport, allow about 1 h 15 min in normal conditions. Alternative routes via the A1 Trakia motorway (exit Ihtiman) or the A3 Struma motorway (exit Dupnitsa) are longer but useful if Samokovsko Shose is congested.
Sofia Airport to Borovets transfer: shared shuttle
Shared shuttles charge per seat and run from Terminals 1 and 2 to fixed stops or hotels in Borovets. Traventuria has run a scheduled service from both terminals to its own base and to the Hotel Ela stop in the resort, with recent fares of around €11–14 per seat and a journey time of about 1 h 10 min – 1 h 30 min. Several transfer companies also sell seats on shared minibuses that group passengers from flights landing around the same time.
- Check the departure times. Fixed-time shuttles do not wait for late flights, and outside peak weeks there may be only one evening departure.
- Waiting for others. On grouped shared transfers, you may wait for other passengers’ flights before leaving.
- Drop-off points. Borovets is spread out along the road between the Rila hotel area and the gondola; confirm whether you will be dropped at your hotel or at a central stop.
- Season. Ski shuttles generally run from mid-December to early April. Timetables for 2026/27 are usually published in the autumn.
Sofia to Borovets bus
There is no public bus from the airport to Borovets. Coaches leave from Sofia South Bus Station (Avtogara Yug), not from Central Bus Station, so check the station on your ticket. From the airport, a taxi to the South Bus Station is the simplest connection; by public transport it involves at least one change.
Direct coach to Borovets
Dajana N79 has run direct coaches from Sofia South Bus Station to the Hotel Ela stop in Borovets, with recent departures at around 08:00 and 10:30, a fare of about €7 and a journey time of about 1 h 30 min. With so few departures it only suits morning arrivals or travellers staying a night in Sofia first. Winter timetables can add extra runs in peak weeks – confirm before travelling.
Coach to Samokov, then on to Borovets
Samokov is better served: Dajana N79 and Monikana 5 together run around ten coaches a day from Sofia South Bus Station, taking about 1 hour, with fares of €4.50–5. From Samokov bus station it is about 10 km up to Borovets by local bus or taxi. Local bus times to the resort vary by season, so a taxi from Samokov is the reliable fallback; agree the price before setting off.
Luggage on the coach
Regional coaches have hold space, but skis and board bags are not guaranteed a place and drivers may charge for bulky items. With full ski luggage, a door-to-door transfer is much easier.
Sofia Airport to Borovets taxi
OK Supertrans is the official taxi company at Sofia Airport, with desks in the arrivals areas of both terminals. Its published tariff applies to trips within Sofia: €1.50 start and €0.75 per km by day, €1.70 and €0.85 per km from 22:00 to 06:00, plus €0.25 per minute waiting. There are no published fixed fares to Borovets, so ask for a quote at the desk or call OK Supertrans before you go, and confirm the total includes luggage. Do not accept offers from drivers approaching you in the terminal or at the kerb; the airport specifically warns against unofficial taxis.
A taxi suits a quick, unplanned trip. If you have several ski bags or children, a pre-booked vehicle is usually more practical.
Pre-booked private transfers from Sofia Airport to Borovets
A private transfer is priced per vehicle, while a shared shuttle is priced per seat. For one or two travellers the shared seat is normally cheaper. For families and groups the maths often flips: a minivan for six to eight skiers, split between everyone, can cost about the same per person as shared seats, without stops at other hotels. Private transfers are worth considering when:
- you land in the evening or at night, after the coaches and most shuttles have stopped;
- you need child seats or boosters (request them with the children’s ages when booking);
- you carry ski or board bags and boot bags for several people;
- you want a fixed price and meet-and-greet at arrivals, with flight tracking if you are delayed;
- you are staying at a hotel or apartment away from the main bus stop.
Compare local companies on our Sofia Airport transfers page and the Borovets transfers page, then book directly with the operator. Companies listed for this route include Transfer Borovets (Traventuria), BG Trans Company, Transfers BG, Pirin Transfers and Transfer Bulgaria. When comparing quotes, ask about ski bag allowances, night surcharges, included waiting time and return trips.
Driving to Borovets: winter tyres, chains and the vignette
Car hire desks are in the arrivals halls at Sofia Airport, and the short drive makes a hire car a reasonable choice, especially if you want to visit Sofia or Bansko during your stay. Before you set off:
- Winter tyres are compulsory in Bulgaria from 15 November to 1 March, with at least 4 mm of tread. Studded tyres are banned.
- Snow chains may be fitted only when road conditions require it. The climb from Samokov to Borovets can be snowy, so ask the rental company for chains.
- E-vignette. Main roads and motorways require an electronic vignette. Since 1 August 2026 a car vignette costs €5.30 for one day, €6.60 for a weekend, €10 for a week and €19.90 for a month. Most rental cars already have one; if not, buy it online through the official BG TOLL system.
- Parking. Parking at the Yastrebets gondola and the other lift bases is limited and usually paid; many hotels have their own spaces.
Weekend traffic and winter road conditions
Because Borovets is so close to the capital, it fills with Sofia day-trippers and weekenders. Expect slow traffic on Samokovsko Shose leaving Sofia on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, and returning on Sunday afternoons. Saturday is also the main changeover day for package holidays, so the airport and the road are busiest then. Add 30–45 minutes at these times, and more in heavy snowfall, when the final climb above Samokov can slow to a crawl.
For your return flight, leaving Borovets 3 hours before departure is a sensible minimum, more on a Sunday or in snow.
Ski luggage, child seats and late arrivals
Tell your transfer company exactly how many ski or board bags and boot bags you are bringing, so they send a big enough vehicle. If you plan to hire skis in the resort, travelling with only a suitcase makes the coach or shuttle far easier.
Coaches and shared minibuses do not provide child seats. Private transfer companies usually can, if requested in advance.
Many winter flights land in the evening. After the last afternoon coach, the options are an evening shuttle (if your flight time fits), a taxi or a pre-booked private transfer. For arrivals after about 21:00, book ahead and give the company your flight number.
Beyond Borovets: Sofia, Bansko and other options
- Sofia. If you are spending a night in the capital before or after skiing, see Sofia transfers for operators in the city.
- Bansko. Bulgaria’s largest ski resort is about 2.5–3 hours from Sofia Airport. Some visitors combine both resorts in one trip; see Bansko transfers.
- Rila Monastery is a popular day trip from Borovets, best done by car or with a private driver.
Tips for your Borovets transfer
- Book peak weeks early. Christmas, New Year and February holidays see the highest demand for minivans.
- Check your terminal. Most international flights use Terminal 2; a free shuttle bus links the two terminals around the clock.
- Official taxis only. Use the OK Supertrans desk or a pre-booked car.
- Euro prices. Older websites may still show leva (1 euro = 1.95583 leva). Convert before comparing.
- Cash for small fares. Coach tickets and local taxis in Samokov are easiest with euro cash; most transfer companies accept card or online payment.
- Arriving to ski. The Yastrebets gondola is the main lift up the mountain; ask for a drop-off near it if you want to hit the slopes on arrival day.
