Coach, taxi or private transfer? Euro prices, journey times, the Plovdiv Airport alternative and winter driving rules for getting from Sofia Airport to Pamporovo in the 2026/27 ski season.
The quickest way to get from Sofia Airport to Pamporovo is a pre-booked private transfer, which covers the roughly 230 km in about 3 h 15 min to 4 hours depending on snow and traffic. The cheapest option is the daily coach from Sofia Central Bus Station to Pamporovo for around €16, but it leaves only once a day in the morning, so it rarely suits a flight. Skiers landing at Plovdiv Airport are much closer – about 80 km and 1 h 30 min by road. To compare fixed-price cars from arrivals, see Sofia Airport transfers.
Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, so winter 2026/27 is the first full ski season with coach fares, taxis and transfers priced in euros.

Pamporovo lies in the Rhodope mountains in southern Bulgaria, about 85 km south of Plovdiv, 10 km south of Chepelare and 15 km north of Smolyan. From Sofia Airport the drive follows the A1 Trakia motorway east to Plovdiv, then the mountain road south through Asenovgrad, the Chepelare river gorge and Chepelare up to the resort. The motorway section is quick; the last 80 km is a winding two-lane road where snow, slow lorries and weekend traffic cost the most time. Most of the resort’s 30 km of pistes run off Snezhanka peak (1,926 m).
Sofia to Pamporovo bus
There is no public bus from Sofia Airport itself to Pamporovo. You first ride the metro into the city, then take a regional coach from Sofia Central Bus Station.
Getting to Sofia Central Bus Station
From Terminal 2, metro line M4 runs into the city; change at Serdika to line M2 for Central Railway Station. The bus station is next door. The trip takes under 30 minutes and a single ticket costs €0.80. If you land at Terminal 1, take the free inter-terminal shuttle bus to Terminal 2 first.
Timetable, fare and journey time
Recent ticket listings show one daily coach from Sofia Central Bus Station to Pamporovo, run by Group Plus, leaving at 08:00 and arriving at about 11:47 – roughly 3 h 45 min. The fare has been around €16 one way. The same coach continues to Smolyan (around €18, arriving about 12:15). With only one morning departure, it works for travellers who spend a night in Sofia, not for a typical afternoon or evening arrival. Check the timetable for the ski season before you travel, as extra winter or weekend runs are not guaranteed.
Where the coach stops in Pamporovo
Coaches stop on the main road through the resort. Ask the driver for the stop closest to your hotel; Pamporovo is spread out, and some hotels are a short taxi ride from the road. Buy your ticket at the bus station windows or online in advance, especially for Friday and Saturday travel in peak weeks.
Luggage
Coaches have hold space, but ski and board bags are not guaranteed a place and a small fee for bulky items is possible. With ski gear, the metro change at Serdika and the walk to the bus station are hard work.
Plovdiv to Pamporovo bus
Plovdiv is the natural gateway to the Rhodopes. Buses towards Smolyan leave from Plovdiv’s Rodopi bus station, next to the central railway station, and pass through Asenovgrad and Chepelare before reaching Pamporovo. The trip takes about 2 hours. There are several departures a day, but timetables change between seasons, so check at the station or with the operator the day before. This route suits travellers who have spent time in Plovdiv or arrived there by train; frequent trains and coaches link Sofia and Plovdiv.
Sofia Airport to Pamporovo taxi
The official airport taxi company at Sofia Airport is OK Supertrans, with desks in the arrivals halls of both terminals. Its published metered tariff covers trips within Sofia (€1.50 start plus €0.75 per km by day, €1.70 plus €0.85 per km between 22:00 and 06:00). There is no published fixed fare to Pamporovo, so ask at the desk for a total price before setting off and agree whether it includes ski bags. Never accept a ride from drivers who approach you inside or outside the terminal.
For a 230 km mountain journey most visitors find a pre-booked transfer simpler: the price is agreed in advance, the vehicle is sized for ski bags and the driver tracks your flight.
Pre-booked private transfers to Pamporovo
A private transfer is priced per vehicle, not per seat. Prices seen on booking sites for Sofia Airport to Pamporovo start at around €175 for a car and rise to around €215 for an 8-seat minibus; from Plovdiv Airport they start at around €85. Split between four or six skiers, the per-person cost comes close to a shuttle seat, and you get door-to-door service. Shared ski shuttles are much less common on the Sofia–Pamporovo route than on the Sofia–Bansko route, so for most groups a private car or minibus is the practical choice.
A private transfer is especially worth it when:
- you land in the afternoon or evening, after the only daily coach has gone;
- you travel with children and need baby seats or boosters (give the ages when booking);
- you have several ski or board bags and boot bags;
- your hotel is away from the main road or up a steep side road;
- your flight is often delayed – most companies track flights and include waiting time.
You can compare operators on our Sofia Airport transfers page and on the Pamporovo transfers page, then book directly with the company. Companies listed for Bulgarian airport and ski routes include Transfer Bulgaria, Transfers BG, BG Trans Company, ExLimousine and Pirin Transfers. Ask each one whether the quote covers ski bags, night supplements, waiting time and the return journey.
Plovdiv Airport to Pamporovo
Plovdiv Airport, at Krumovo south-east of the city, is the closest airport to Pamporovo – around 80 km and about 1 h 30 min by road, compared with 3 h 15 min or more from Sofia. Plovdiv has had Ryanair flights from London, Manchester and Birmingham, plus seasonal charter flights tied to the winter season, but the schedule changes from year to year. Check the 2026/27 winter timetable before booking. Public transport from the airport is limited, so most skiers pre-book a transfer or taxi. See Plovdiv transfers for local operators.
Driving to Pamporovo: winter tyres, chains and the vignette
All the main car hire companies have desks at Sofia Airport. Points to know for a winter drive:
- Winter tyres are required in Bulgaria from 15 November to 1 March, with a minimum tread of 4 mm. Studded tyres are not allowed. Ask the rental company to confirm winter tyres.
- Snow chains may be used only when conditions require them. Carry a set for the road from Asenovgrad over the Rhodopes, where snow and ice are common from December to March.
- E-vignette. The Trakia motorway and main roads need an electronic vignette. From 1 August 2026 a car vignette costs €5.30 for one day, €6.60 for a weekend, €10 for a week and €19.90 for a month. Rental cars usually have one already; otherwise buy it through the official BG TOLL system before driving.
- Allow daylight. The mountain road is narrow and unlit in places. If you can, plan to cover the Asenovgrad–Pamporovo section before dark.
Saturday transfer day and peak traffic
Package holidays to Pamporovo often run Saturday to Saturday, and the resort is also busy with Bulgarian weekenders from Plovdiv and Sofia. Saturday afternoons and Friday evenings see the heaviest traffic, especially between Asenovgrad and Chepelare. Add 30–60 minutes at weekends in January–March and over Christmas and New Year. For the return, leave Pamporovo at least 4.5–5 hours before a flight from Sofia, or about 2.5 hours before a Plovdiv departure – more in snow.
Ski luggage, child seats and late arrivals
Tell your transfer company in advance how many ski or board bags and boot bags you have. A saloon car takes two skiers with gear at most; for four or more, book a minivan or 8-seater. Renting equipment in Pamporovo makes the coach much easier.
Coaches do not provide child seats. Private transfer companies can usually supply baby seats and boosters if requested when booking.
For a landing after midday there is no public transport option to Pamporovo the same day. Book a private transfer and give the company your flight number so they can follow delays.

Tips for your Pamporovo transfer
- Book peak weeks early. Christmas, New Year and February half-term fill minivans first.
- Season dates. Pamporovo plans to open on 19 December 2026 and close on 11 April 2027, subject to snow.
- Official taxis only. Use the OK Supertrans desk at Sofia Airport or a pre-booked car.
- Prices are in euros. Some older websites still quote leva (1 euro = 1.95583 leva); convert before comparing.
- Payment. Transfer companies usually take card or online payment; coach tickets and taxis in the resort are easiest with cash in euros.
- Check the road before you leave. After heavy snow, the Asenovgrad–Pamporovo road can be slow; your driver will usually know the conditions.
