Zurich Airport to Zermatt: Train, Transfer & Taxi Prices 2026/27

Updated · 8 min read

How to get from Zurich Airport to car-free Zermatt in winter 2026/27: the train via Visp, fares and passes, private transfers and taxis to Täsch, the Täsch shuttle train, driving and parking, and Geneva as an alternative.

The easiest way from Zurich Airport to Zermatt is the train: the station is right under the airport, the trip takes about three and a half hours with a change in Visp, and it ends in the middle of the car-free village. A full-fare 2nd-class ticket costs around CHF 130 (about €140) one way, half that with a Half Fare Card, and Saver Day Passes start from CHF 52. Cars and private transfers can only go as far as Täsch, 5 km down the valley, where a shuttle train takes you the last 12 minutes; compare drivers on our Zurich Airport transfers page.

Switzerland uses the Swiss franc (CHF), not the euro; euro figures are approximate. Train fares are per person, transfer and taxi prices per vehicle.

Zermatt is car free: what that means for your transfer

There are no private cars in Zermatt, and electric cars follow the same rule. Private vehicles, hire cars, taxis from other towns and most transfer vehicles stop at Täsch, the last village before Zermatt. Drivers who continue without authorisation face large fines.

At Täsch, the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch combines a station and car park. Shuttle trains leave every 20 minutes and take 12 minutes to Zermatt station in the village centre. Free luggage trolleys are available against a CHF 5 deposit and can be wheeled onto the shuttle. Switzerland Tourism lists the Täsch–Zermatt shuttle from CHF 8.60; children aged 6–15 and Half Fare Card holders pay half, children under 6 travel free, and GA and Swiss Travel Pass holders need no ticket.

Local taxi companies also run Täsch–Zermatt taxi services with permits, an alternative to the shuttle train if you have a lot of luggage. In Zermatt itself you get around on foot, by electric taxi, on the free e-bus (two routes) or by horse-drawn carriage.

Zurich Airport to Zermatt by train

Zürich Flughafen station is below the Airport Centre, a short walk from arrivals in both check-in areas. The journey has two parts:

  1. SBB train to Visp. Some trains run from the airport directly to Visp; otherwise you change at Zürich HB or Bern. From Bern the line runs through the Lötschberg base tunnel to Visp in the Valais.
  2. Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn to Zermatt. At Visp, change to the red narrow-gauge train of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, which climbs the Mattertal via St. Niklaus and Täsch to Zermatt in a little over an hour. Trains to Zermatt run every half hour.

Zermatt Tourism puts the total journey from Zurich Airport at about three and a half hours. Plan with the SBB app or sbb.ch, which shows the platform and the connection at Visp; one ticket covers both railways.

Zurich Airport to Zermatt train ticket price

  • Full fare: around CHF 130 one way in 2nd class, and around CHF 220 in 1st class, based on recent published fares from Zurich. Prices are distance-based, so check the exact fare for your date.
  • Half Fare Card: halves the price of most tickets, including the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn and the Täsch shuttle.
  • Saver Day Pass: unlimited travel on the Swiss network for one day, from CHF 52 in 2nd class (CHF 29 with a Half Fare Card), on sale up to six months ahead. The cheapest passes sell out first.
  • Supersaver tickets: SBB sells discounted tickets for specific trains in its app and online; they are tied to the train you book.
  • Swiss Travel Pass: for visitors from outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein, it covers the whole trip, including the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn.

Luggage on the train

Swiss trains have racks for suitcases and ski bags and step-free boarding at most stations, but you will handle your own luggage at the change in Visp. SBB’s Fly Rail Baggage service can send bags checked in at an airport abroad via Zurich Airport to a Swiss station or hotel in about 20 popular destinations, delivered the day after arrival; it is booked through a travel agency. Note that SBB’s hotel-to-airport luggage service does not collect from car-free resorts such as Zermatt, so plan to bring bags back yourself.

Driving from Zurich Airport to Zermatt (Täsch)

Täsch is around 270 km from Zurich Airport. The usual winter route runs via Bern to Kandersteg, where you load the car onto the BLS Lötschberg car train through the tunnel to Goppenstein in the Valais, then drive via Visp to Täsch. The car train costs CHF 28 per car Monday to Thursday and CHF 31 Friday to Sunday and on public holidays (passengers included). Allow about three and a half hours in clear conditions, and noticeably longer on winter Saturdays.

  • Vignette: Swiss motorways need a vignette, CHF 40 for the calendar year (valid 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year), sold as an e-vignette at e-vignette.ch or as a sticker. Swiss hire cars come with one.
  • Parking: the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch has 2,100 covered spaces and is open 24 hours; spaces can be booked online. Private providers in Täsch, including taxi companies and hotels, offer more than 1,000 further spaces. A free Kiss & Ride zone allows drop-offs of up to 30 minutes.
  • Winter driving: carry snow chains for the Mattertal road above Visp and check road conditions before setting off.

Pre-booked private transfers from Zurich Airport to Zermatt

A private transfer suits families, groups and skiers with several bags who do not want to change trains with luggage. Your driver meets you in arrivals and drives straight to Täsch, and many operators arrange the onward Täsch–Zermatt leg by shuttle train or local taxi. Child seats can be requested in advance, the price is fixed when you book, and night arrivals are no problem. For a group of four or more, a single per-vehicle quote can come close to the combined cost of individual full-fare train tickets.

See our Zurich Airport transfers page and the Zermatt transfers page for companies you can contact and book directly. Companies serving the route include:

When asking for a quote, confirm whether the price covers the trip to Täsch only or all the way to your hotel in Zermatt, and give the number of ski and board bags and any child seats needed.

Geneva Airport to Zermatt

Geneva is the other main gateway and is slightly closer by road, around 230 km to Täsch via Lausanne, Martigny and Sion on the A9 motorway, with no car train needed. By rail, Geneva Airport station has direct trains towards Brig twice an hour that stop at Visp, where you change for Zermatt; Zermatt Tourism puts the total at about four hours. See our Geneva Airport transfers page or our Geneva Airport to city centre guide if you are stopping in Geneva first.

Saturday transfer day, ski luggage and late arrivals

  • Saturdays: most chalet weeks change over on Saturdays, so trains to Zermatt are busier and roads towards Kandersteg and the Valais slower. Reserve transfers early and allow extra time.
  • Ski and board bags: fine on the train if you can lift them; tell transfer companies in advance how many you have.
  • Late arrivals: check the time of the last connection from Visp to Zermatt for your date before booking a late flight. If you land late in the evening, a private transfer to Täsch is the safer choice; the Täsch car park is open around the clock, and local taxi companies can take you on to Zermatt.

Getting to other places from Zermatt and Zurich Airport

  • Interlaken: the trains between Zurich and Visp pass through Spiez, the change point for Interlaken, so it is easy to combine Zermatt with the Jungfrau region. See our Interlaken transfers page.
  • Glacier Express: the panoramic Glacier Express links Zermatt with Davos and St. Moritz over the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn and Rhaetian Railway; seat reservations are compulsory.
  • Zurich: if you spend a night in the city before heading to the mountains, our Zurich Airport to city centre guide covers the trains, trams and taxi fares.

Tips for getting from Zurich Airport to Zermatt

  • Buy one ticket to Zermatt. The SBB app sells a single ticket covering SBB and the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn.
  • Do not drive into Zermatt. Satnavs may route you up the valley, but private cars must stop at Täsch.
  • Licensed taxis only. Use the official taxi ranks at Zurich Airport or a company you have booked.
  • Payment and tipping: cards are widely accepted on trains and by transfer companies; tips are included in Swiss prices, so rounding up is enough.
  • Check the new timetable. Swiss timetables change in mid-December, so confirm connections for your travel dates.
