Choosing between Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo? Compare transfer times and prices from Sofia Airport, shared shuttles, coaches and private transfers, 2026/27 season dates and when Plovdiv Airport makes more sense.
Bansko, Borovets or Pamporovo? If the transfer matters most, Borovets wins: it is about 70 km from Sofia Airport, roughly 1 h 15 min by road, with shared shuttle seats at around €11–14. Bansko, Bulgaria’s largest ski resort, is about 160 km and 2.5–3 hours away, with the best choice of shared shuttles at around €23–28 a seat. Pamporovo is the furthest from Sofia, about 230 km and 3 h 15 min to 4 hours, but only around 80 km from Plovdiv Airport. Families and groups with ski bags usually pre-book a private vehicle; compare operators on our Sofia Airport transfers page.
Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, so winter 2026/27 is the first full ski season with every fare, taxi and lift pass priced in euros.

Bansko or Borovets: transfer time and cost
For most visitors the choice comes down to these two, because both are served by shared shuttles straight from Sofia Airport’s arrivals halls. Borovets is less than half the distance: about 70 km on Samokovsko Shose past the Iskar reservoir and Samokov, against about 160 km for Bansko down the A3 Struma motorway, through the Kresna gorge and over the Predela pass. That difference shows up everywhere:
- Time: around 1 h 15 min to Borovets against 2.5–3 hours to Bansko, before any Saturday traffic or snow.
- Shared seats: around €11–14 per person to Borovets, around €23–28 to Bansko.
- Return trip: leave Borovets at least 3 hours before your flight, Bansko at least 4 hours before, and more on a Saturday or in snow.
- Late flights: a private transfer to Borovets after a late landing still gets you to bed at a reasonable hour; for Bansko it means arriving in the small hours.
Bansko’s longer journey is offset by more scheduled shuttles and coaches. Borovets is close enough to Sofia that it also fills with weekenders from the capital, so Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons are slow on the road.
Sofia Airport to Borovets
Shared shuttles leave from Terminals 1 and 2 at fixed times; one long-running scheduled service has stopped at the Hotel Ela stop in the resort, with a journey of about 1 h 10 min – 1 h 30 min. There is no public bus from the airport. On a budget, take a taxi or city transport to Sofia South Bus Station (not Central): Dajana N79 has run direct coaches to Borovets at around 08:00 and 10:30 for about €7, and around ten coaches a day go to Samokov for €4.50–5, about 10 km below the resort. The official airport taxi company, OK Supertrans, publishes no fixed fare to Borovets, so ask for a total at the desk. Full details, including driving and winter tyres, are in our Sofia Airport to Borovets guide; local operators are on the Borovets transfers page.
Sofia Airport to Bansko
Bansko has the widest choice of shared ski shuttles in Bulgaria. Traventuria’s scheduled service has recently picked up at both terminals in the afternoon and taken about 2 h 40 min to Bansko bus station and its ski shop near the gondola. Semi-shared services that group several flights are also common, so expect some waiting. The cheapest route is the metro to Sofia Central Bus Station (under 30 minutes, €0.80) and one of roughly 6–8 daily coaches for around €12–14, most leaving between about 07:00 and 14:00, so it rarely suits an afternoon landing. A slow but scenic alternative is the train via Septemvri on the narrow-gauge line, 6.5–8 hours in total. See our Sofia Airport to Bansko guide and the Bansko transfers page.
Sofia Airport to Pamporovo – or fly to Plovdiv
Pamporovo, in the Rhodope mountains about 85 km south of Plovdiv, is the hardest of the three to reach from Sofia. The drive follows the Trakia motorway to Plovdiv, then a winding two-lane mountain road through Asenovgrad and Chepelare. Public transport is limited to one morning coach from Sofia Central Bus Station (Group Plus, 08:00, around €16, about 3 h 45 min), and shared shuttles are much less common than to Bansko, so most visitors book a private car or minibus. Booking sites show prices from around €175 for a car and around €215 for an 8-seat minibus.
Plovdiv Airport is the closest airport to Pamporovo, around 80 km and about 1 h 30 min by road, with private transfers from around €85 on booking sites. Its schedule changes from year to year: in late October 2026 the airport’s flight board showed Ryanair flights from London Stansted, Manchester and Milan Malpensa and Wizz Air flights from London Luton, so check the full 2026/27 winter timetable before booking. If you do fly into Sofia, a night in Plovdiv breaks up the trip; see our Sofia Airport to Plovdiv guide. More in our Sofia Airport to Pamporovo guide, plus the Pamporovo and Plovdiv transfer pages.
Shared shuttle or private transfer? The group maths
Shuttles charge per seat; private transfers charge per vehicle. Using the recent shuttle fares above, the total for a group is:
| Route (shared fare per seat) | 2 people | 4 people | 6 people | 8 people |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sofia Airport → Borovets (around €11–14) | €22–28 | €44–56 | €66–84 | €88–112 |
| Sofia Airport → Bansko (around €23–28) | €46–56 | €92–112 | €138–168 | €184–224 |
Ask private transfer companies for a fixed quote for your group and compare it with these totals. For couples a shared seat is usually cheaper; for families of four and groups of six to eight with ski bags, a private minivan often costs about the same per person, leaves when you land and goes to your hotel door. Our ski transfer prices guide compares the same maths across 12 European routes.
Season dates 2026/27
- Bansko: the lift company’s price page gives the winter season as 1 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, inclusive, with dates subject to snow and weather.
- Borovets: no 2026/27 opening date published by the resort in October 2026. Last season the official opening was on 27 December 2025.
- Pamporovo: planned dates of 19 December 2026 to 11 April 2027 are listed by ski-resort databases but not yet confirmed on the resort’s own site. Ski pass presales run from 15 October to 15 November 2026.
Scheduled shuttles usually run from mid-December to early or mid-April, with the most departures from mid-January to mid-March.
Saturday changeover and winter roads
Package holidays to all three resorts mostly run Saturday to Saturday, so Saturday afternoons bring the busiest airport and the slowest roads. Add 30–60 minutes at weekends from January to March and over Christmas and New Year. If you drive, winter tyres with at least 4 mm of tread are required from 15 November to 1 March, chains should be carried for the mountain sections, and you need an e-vignette (from €5.30 for one day since 1 August 2026). The Predela pass to Bansko, the climb from Samokov to Borovets and the Asenovgrad–Pamporovo road are where snow costs the most time.
Pre-booked private transfers to the Bulgarian ski resorts
A private transfer is worth it when you land in the evening, after the coaches have gone; when you need child seats (give the children’s ages when booking); when you have several ski, board and boot bags; or when your chalet or apartment is away from the main bus stop. Give the company your flight number so they can follow delays, and ask whether the price covers ski bags, night supplements, waiting time and the return trip.
Companies listed on intransfers.com for these routes include BanskoShuttle.com, Bansko Transfers, Pirin Transfers, Transfer Borovets (Traventuria), Transfers BG and BG Trans Company. Compare more operators on our Sofia Airport transfers page and book directly with the company.
Which resort to choose if…
- You want the shortest transfer or land late: Borovets.
- You are travelling alone or as a couple on a budget: Bansko, for the most shared shuttles, or Borovets, for the cheapest seats.
- You have a flight to Plovdiv: Pamporovo, about 1 h 30 min away.
- You want to ski early in December: Bansko, whose planned season starts on 1 December.
- You want a city night as well: Borovets and Sofia combine easily; Pamporovo pairs with Plovdiv.
Tips for your Bulgarian ski transfer
- Book peak weeks early: Christmas, New Year and February half-term fill minivans first.
- Check your terminal: most international flights use Terminal 2; a free shuttle bus links the terminals around the clock.
- Official taxis only: use the OK Supertrans desk in arrivals or a pre-booked car, never drivers who approach you in the hall.
- Prices in euros: older websites may still quote leva (1 euro = 1.95583 leva); convert before comparing.
- Rent skis in the resort: travelling with only a suitcase makes coaches and shuttles much easier.
- Staying in Sofia first? The metro reaches the centre in about 20 minutes – see our Sofia Airport to city centre guide.
