Which airport is closest to Chamonix, Courchevel, Val Thorens, Tignes or Alpe d'Huez? Distances, drive times, flights and coach options from Geneva, Lyon, Chambéry and Grenoble for winter 2026/27.
For Chamonix and Morzine, fly to Geneva: both resorts are around 75–90 km and about 1 hour 15 minutes from the airport. For the Tarentaise resorts – Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens, Tignes, Val d’Isère, Les Arcs and La Plagne – Chambéry is the closest airport at roughly 1.5–2 hours by road, but its flights are mainly winter ski services, so most skiers choose between Geneva and Lyon, which are both about 2.5–3 hours away. For Alpe d’Huez and Les 2 Alpes, Grenoble is closest, with Lyon a close second. Whichever you choose, a pre-booked Geneva Airport transfer or Lyon Airport transfer takes you door to door.

Distances and drive times from each airport to 11 French ski resorts
Times are for a car in clear conditions and are rounded; on a peak Saturday, or in snow, add an hour or more. Shared shuttles and coaches take longer because of drop-offs. Distances marked “around” come from operator and ski-guide estimates rather than official figures.

Bold marks the closest airport for each resort. The Tarentaise resorts all share one access road through Albertville and Moûtiers, so the difference between Geneva and Lyon is usually smaller than the kilometres suggest, and traffic on that road matters more than the airport you choose.
Flying into Geneva: most flights, easiest for Chamonix and Morzine
Geneva Airport has the biggest choice of airlines and departure times of the four, including Air France, easyJet, Swiss, Lufthansa, British Airways and KLM according to Les 3 Vallées, and Jet2 flies there from nine UK airports in winter 2026/27. That makes it the default for most skiers and the only sensible choice for Chamonix and Morzine.
- Chamonix: FlixBus runs at least four direct coaches a day from about €20 in around 1 hour 25 minutes, and shared and private transfers take about 1 hour 15 minutes. Full details are in our Geneva Airport to Chamonix guide.
- Tarentaise: the Altibus coach (sold as Alpskibus) runs daily from 18 December 2026 to 27 March 2027 to Moûtiers, Les Menuires, Val Thorens, Méribel, Courchevel, Aime (for La Plagne), Bourg-Saint-Maurice, Tignes and Val d’Isère, from €47 for adults. Altibus quotes about 2 hours to Moûtiers. See our Geneva Airport to Courchevel, Méribel and Val Thorens guide.
- Taxi: Geneva taxis leaving the canton charge Tariff II, up to CHF 3.80 per km plus a CHF 7.80 airport pick-up charge, so a long mountain trip runs into several hundred francs. A pre-booked transfer with a fixed price is usually better value.
- Driving: Swiss motorways need the CHF 40 vignette. Geneva also has a French sector, which matters if you hire a French-registered car. If you are staying in the city first, see our Geneva Airport to city centre guide.
The downside for the Tarentaise is distance: allow 2.5–3.5 hours door to door to Les 3 Vallées, and more on a Saturday.
Flying into Lyon: good for the Tarentaise and the Oisans
Lyon Saint-Exupéry is a large French hub with many airlines, and Jet2 adds a weekly ski flight from Manchester in 2026/27. It is roughly level with Geneva for the Tarentaise and clearly better for Alpe d’Huez and Les 2 Alpes.
- Coaches: Altibus LYS’Express runs from 11 December 2026 to 3 April 2027 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays depending on the destination, from €55 for adults. Lyon Airport’s approximate coach times are 1 hour 40 minutes to Moûtiers, 2 hours 20 minutes to Val Thorens and 2 hours 45 minutes to Tignes and Val d’Isère.
- Ben’s Bus: Saturday shared transfers to Val Thorens (singles £53, about €61) and Alpe d’Huez (£43.50, about €50), aimed at Saturday-to-Saturday ski weeks.
- Train: the Rhônexpress tram (€16.30) links the airport with Lyon Part-Dieu for trains towards the Alps, but expect 4–5 hours with changes.
Coaches do not run every day, so for a midweek or late arrival a private transfer is the practical choice. Our Lyon Airport to Val Thorens, Tignes and Les Arcs guide covers every option, and companies are listed on Lyon Airport transfers.
Flying into Chambéry: the closest airport for Les 3 Vallées and Tignes
Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport (CMF) sits beside Lac du Bourget, north of Chambéry, and is the closest airport to the Tarentaise. Val Thorens puts it at 122 km, against about 200 km from Geneva or Lyon, and Les 3 Vallées gives about 55 minutes by road from Chambéry to Moûtiers.
The catch is the flight schedule. Its operator, VINCI Airports, describes winter ski charters and business aviation as its peak, and the airlines listed by Les 3 Vallées are mainly UK ski carriers. For 2026/27, Jet2 includes Chambéry in its ski programme from seven UK airports, with flights from mid-December. If you are booking a package from the UK, a Saturday Chambéry flight can save an hour or more each way; if you are flying from elsewhere or midweek, there may be no suitable flight at all.
Because flights are concentrated on winter weekends, the small terminal and the roads out can be busy on Saturdays. Transfers from Chambéry are mainly pre-booked shared or private transfers. There is no Chambéry Airport page on intransfers.com yet, so contact the resort-based companies on the Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens, Tignes, Val d’Isère and Les Arcs pages and ask whether they collect from Chambéry.
Grenoble: the fourth option for Alpe d’Huez and Les 2 Alpes
Grenoble Alpes-Isère Airport is about 100 km from Alpe d’Huez according to the resort and 120 km from Les 2 Alpes, making it the closest airport for both. It is served mainly by low-cost and UK ski flights in winter; Jet2 flies there from four UK bases in 2026/27. Alpe d’Huez says Ben’s Bus runs transfers timed to selected flights, and the Actibus shuttle reaches Grenoble railway station in about 40 minutes. For the Tarentaise, Grenoble is not closer than Geneva or Lyon, at around 2–2.5 hours or more. There is no Grenoble Airport page on intransfers.com yet.
Which airport to choose if…
- …you are going to Chamonix, Les Houches, Argentière or Morzine: Geneva, every time.
- …you are going to Courchevel, Méribel or Val Thorens and a Chambéry flight fits: Chambéry, for the shortest transfer.
- …you are going to the Tarentaise and want the most flight choice: Geneva, with the daily Altibus coach or a pre-booked transfer.
- …you want a weekend coach and to avoid Swiss roads: Lyon, with Altibus on Fridays to Sundays.
- …you are going to Alpe d’Huez or Les 2 Alpes: Grenoble if a flight fits, otherwise Lyon.
- …you arrive midweek or late at night: Geneva or Lyon, with a private transfer, because coaches and charter flights are concentrated at weekends.
- …you are a group of four or more: the airport with the cheapest flights, then a private minibus; one vehicle price split between the group often matches the cost of coach seats.
Saturday traffic and other tips
- Saturday changeover: most chalets and residences change over on Saturdays, and the valley road between Albertville and Moûtiers becomes one of the busiest in the Alps on peak weekends, especially in the French February holidays. Les 3 Vallées recommends Sunday-to-Sunday stays where possible.
- Book coaches early: Altibus seats are limited on peak Saturdays, and coaches will not wait long for a late flight.
- Winter equipment: in France, winter tyres or chains are required from 1 November to 31 March in the mountain communes listed by each prefecture, and you need chains for the final climbs to many resorts in snow.
- Ski bags: coaches charge skis as a hold item; tell transfer companies how many ski and board bags you have.
- Return trip: allow at least as much time as the outward journey, plus check-in; on a Saturday leave earlier still.
