Funchal is the capital of Madeira. Madeira Airport is about 13 km east of the city. Local firms run airport trips, cruise port pick-ups and island tours by the half day or full day. The city is built on steep hills, so a driver who knows the roads is useful.

Ride-hailing apps also operate on the island and are often cheaper than taxis.

Funchal Aerobus

The Aerobus runs about every 60 minutes in the day, and less often in the evening. It makes 26 stops and ends at Praia Formosa. Children aged 6–12 pay €3.20. Return tickets are no longer sold.

Cruise port and island tours

Funchal has a busy cruise port, and several companies offer pick-ups at the ship. For sightseeing, many taxi firms run half-day (4 hours) and full-day (8 hours) tours around Madeira. Chauffeur and limousine cars are available for weddings and events. Book early if you arrive on a cruise ship, as port days are busy.
