Transfers in Portugal
Portugal is easy to get around, but airports, resorts and wine regions are often far from the nearest train. Local taxi firms and private transfer companies cover every main airport, plus long routes between regions and over the border to Spain.
Main airports in Portugal
- Lisbon Airport (LIS): about 7 km from the centre, for Lisbon, Cascais, Sintra and Fátima
- Porto Airport (OPO): about 10 km from Porto, for the city and the Douro Valley
- Faro Airport (FAO): the gateway to the Algarve
- Madeira Airport (FNC): about 13 km from Funchal
- Ponta Delgada Airport (PDL): on São Miguel in the Azores
Portugal taxi fares and rules
Taxis are metered and drivers are certified by the IMT. Motorway tolls are paid by the passenger, and fares are about 20% higher at night. Luggage costs about €1.60. You can ask for a receipt (recibo). Typical airport fares are about €10–20 into Lisbon and about €25–35 into Porto.
Taxi, private transfer or ride-hailing?
Private transfer firms are licensed by Turismo de Portugal and usually publish fixed prices per vehicle, not per person. Ride-hailing apps also operate in the main cities. For long trips, such as Porto to Lisbon (from about €360), a pre-booked transfer is the simplest choice.
