Transfers in Austria
Austria has two very different transfer markets. In the east, Vienna has a busy airport and a regulated taxi trade with fixed airport fares. In the west, the Alps fill up every winter with skiers heading from the airports to resorts in Tyrol, the Arlberg and SalzburgerLand.
Ski transfer airports in Austria
- Innsbruck Airport: the closest for St. Anton, Ischgl, Sölden and Mayrhofen, mostly 1–1.5 hours
- Salzburg Airport: best for Zell am See, Saalbach, Bad Gastein and Kitzbühel
- Munich Airport: more flights, but often 2–3.5 hours to the resorts
- Zurich Airport: about 200 km from the Arlberg, with a shared winter bus
Vienna airport taxi fixed fares
Since March 2021 Vienna taxis may offer fixed prices for pre-booked trips. Airport taxis cost about €37–42 for up to 4 people, and pre-booked transfer firms start lower still. Vienna is far from the ski resorts: Salzburg is almost 4 hours by car.
Shared or private ski transfer?
Shared shuttles sell seats per person and run on fixed timetables, so they suit solo travellers and couples. Private cars and minibuses are priced per vehicle and wait for delayed flights, which is better value for families and groups. Book early for winter Saturdays, when roads into the valleys are slow.
