Vienna Airport to City Centre: Train, Bus, Taxi & Transfer Prices 2026

Updated · 7 min read

How to get from Vienna Airport to the city centre during the 2026–27 S-Bahn closure: Railjet and REX7 trains, CAT by bus, Vienna Airport Bus lines, taxi fixed prices and private transfers compared.

The fastest way to get from Vienna Airport to the city centre in 2026 is an ÖBB Railjet to Wien Hauptbahnhof: about 15 minutes, twice an hour, on a €5.50 public transport ticket that also covers your onward U-Bahn ride. The easiest door-to-door option is a fixed-price taxi or transfer from around €42, and the City Airport Train (now running as “CAT by bus” to Wien Mitte) costs €14.90. Important: from 7 September 2026 to the end of October 2027 the S-Bahn trunk line through central Vienna is closed, so the S7 and CAT train no longer reach Wien Mitte.

Vienna Airport train to the city: what changed in 2026

From 7 September 2026 until the end of October 2027, the S-Bahn trunk line (Stammstrecke) between Wien Praterstern and Wien Hauptbahnhof is closed for modernisation. During this period Rennweg and Wien Mitte/Landstraße cannot be reached by train from the airport, and the City Airport Train runs as a bus. Trains still serve the airport station below the terminals, but they now go to different places:

ÖBB Railjet and Intercity to Wien Hauptbahnhof

Long-distance Railjet and Intercity trains run non-stop from Flughafen Wien to Wien Hauptbahnhof twice an hour in about 15 minutes, and continue to Wien Meidling (U6) in just under 30 minutes. At Hauptbahnhof you change to U1 for Karlsplatz and Stephansplatz, or to trams. This is the quickest public option in 2026.

REX7 and S7

The REX7 regional train runs from the airport to Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 20 minutes. The S7 is shortened and terminates at Wien St. Marx in about 18 minutes; that station is outside the centre, so you continue by tram 18 (to Hauptbahnhof), tram 71 (to Karlsplatz) or bus 74A (to Landstraße for U3/U4), or walk about 10 minutes to the U3. Unless your hotel is in the 3rd district, the REX7 or Railjet is the simpler choice.

Train tickets and prices

The standard ticket from the airport to anywhere in Vienna costs €5.50 for adults: €2.30 for the section from the airport to the city boundary plus €3.20 for the Vienna core zone. Children aged 6 to 14 pay €2.80 and under-6s travel free. The same ticket is valid on the S7, REX7 and ÖBB Railjet trains between the airport and Vienna, and the Vienna part also covers your onward U-Bahn, tram or bus ride. If you already hold a Vienna City Card or a Wiener Linien multi-day ticket, you only need the €2.30 extension.

Buy tickets from the ÖBB machines and ticket counter in the airport, in the ÖBB app or on oebb.at, and validate paper tickets before boarding.

City Airport Train (CAT by bus) to Wien Mitte

The CAT is the premium link to Wien Mitte/Landstraße. Until 31 October 2027 it runs with premium coaches instead of trains, non-stop in about 21 minutes. At the airport it leaves from directly in front of Arrivals, Terminal 3; in town it stops at Marxergasse 1b (The Mall), close to the U3 and U4 lines.

  • From the airport: first at 06:10, last at 23:37; every 15 minutes until 07:00, every 12 minutes from 07:00 to 19:00, then every 15 minutes.
  • From Wien Mitte: first at 05:30, last at 23:15.
  • Fares: €14.90 single, €24.90 return (valid six months); children under 15 free; reduced fares for holders of the KlimaTicket, ÖBB Vorteilscard and some other cards.

Tickets are sold on cityairporttrain.com, at the CAT machines and by CAT staff at the bus. The City Check-in for luggage at Wien Mitte is suspended while the buses run. For most travellers the €5.50 train to Hauptbahnhof is faster and cheaper; the CAT is worth it if you are staying near Wien Mitte or want a guaranteed seat with luggage space.

Vienna Airport Bus lines

The Vienna Airport Bus (formerly Vienna Airport Lines) has run unaffected by the rail closure and added two new lines on 5 September 2026. Buses leave from the bus station in front of the terminal and run from early morning until late at night.

  • VAB 1: airport – Wien Hauptbahnhof – Westbahnhof, about 40 minutes.
  • VAB 2: airport – Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz (U1/U4, edge of the old town), about 22 minutes.
  • VAB 3: airport – Kaisermühlen VIC (UN City) – Donauzentrum.
  • VAB 4: airport – Karlsplatz (new in 2026).
  • VAB 5: airport – Praterstern (new in 2026).

Fares are €11 one way or €20 return; children aged 6–14 pay €6, children under 6 travel free, and a family ticket for two adults and two children costs €27 one way. Tickets are sold online at viennaairportbus.com, at machines at the airport and Westbahnhof, and from the driver. The VAB 2 to Schwedenplatz is handy for hotels in the 1st district without changing trains.

Vienna Airport taxi to the city centre

Vienna Airport is in Lower Austria, just outside the city, so many Vienna taxi companies offer a flat airport price instead of the meter. For example, Taxi 40100 charges a flat €42 for up to four passengers between the airport and any address in Vienna, with 20 minutes of free waiting after landing; extra stops cost more.

At the airport, use the taxi rank directly in front of the arrivals hall or the “City Transfer” counters inside it. The airport warns against people who approach you in the arrivals hall offering rides: they are not authorised and may have no licence. Ask for the price before you set off if you take a taxi from the rank without booking. A taxi ride to the centre usually takes 25–40 minutes depending on traffic on the A4 motorway.

Uber and Bolt at Vienna Airport

Ride-hailing apps operate in Vienna and can be used from the airport. Follow the pick-up instructions in the app, and compare the quoted price with a fixed-price taxi – at busy times the app fare can be higher than the €42-style flat rates.

Pre-booked private transfers from Vienna Airport

With a pre-booked transfer the driver tracks your flight, waits in arrivals with a name sign and takes you to your address for a price agreed in advance. It is worth it when:

  • you are a group of three or more, where one car or minivan can cost less than several train tickets plus the walk with luggage;
  • you land after the last CAT bus (23:37) or need to be at your hotel without changes;
  • you travel with children and need child or booster seats;
  • you have skis, a pram, a wheelchair or lots of bags;
  • you are going on to Bratislava, Budapest or the Alps rather than into Vienna.

Companies listed on intransfers.com include ATS Airport Transfer Service, DAS Flughafentaxi Wien, Vienna Driver and Mozart Chauffeur Service, alongside Taxi 40100 above. You book directly with each company, so check what the price includes: waiting time, child seats, luggage, and card payment. See the full list on our Vienna Airport transfers page, or browse companies across the city on the Vienna transfers page.

From Vienna Airport to Bratislava, Budapest and Salzburg

Vienna Airport lies east of the city, which makes it a common gateway for Slovakia and Hungary as well as Austria.

  • Bratislava (about 50 km): coaches run between Vienna Airport and Bratislava in roughly an hour, including Slovak Lines, whose express buses also connect Vienna with Bratislava Airport. A taxi or transfer takes around 45–60 minutes. See Bratislava transfers and Bratislava Airport transfers.
  • Budapest (about 250 km): around 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours by road; trains run from Wien Hauptbahnhof. See Budapest transfers.
  • Salzburg (about 300 km): take the train via Wien Hauptbahnhof (around 3 hours in total) or a car (around 3 hours). See Salzburg transfers.

Tips for getting from Vienna Airport to the city

  • Check the rail closure. Until the end of October 2027, do not plan on reaching Wien Mitte by train. Older guides and hotel directions may still say “take the S7 or CAT to Wien Mitte”.
  • Night arrivals. The last CAT bus leaves at 23:37. Airport buses run almost around the clock and trains run until around midnight, but after that a fixed-price taxi or pre-booked transfer is the simplest option.
  • Avoid unlicensed drivers. Only take taxis from the rank, the City Transfer counters, an app or a company you have booked.
  • Card payment is widely accepted on taxis, transfers and ticket machines; confirm when booking.
  • Tipping: rounding up or adding around 5–10% for good service is usual in Austria.
  • Peak traffic on the A4 motorway (weekday mornings into town, evenings out) can make road transfers slower; the Railjet is not affected.
  • Validate train tickets before boarding; inspectors charge a penalty for unvalidated tickets.
