Getting around Malta: travel guides

Malta airport transfers and taxis

Malta is small, so most transfers are short. Malta International Airport is in Luqa, about 5 km from Valletta. It handled almost 9 million passengers in 2024. White taxis run around the clock, and their fares from the airport and the Seaport Terminal are fixed. Distances are short, so even the far north is only about an hour away.

Malta Airport taxi prices

Fares at the airport taxi counter are about €17 to Valletta, €20 to Sliema or St Julian’s, €28 to Bugibba and €33 to Mellieħa. Pre-booked cab firms list similar fixed prices of about €15–35 for up to four people. Ride-hailing apps such as Bolt, eCabs and Uber also work in Malta.

Malta airport buses

Malta Public Transport runs five tallinja Direct routes, TD1 to TD5, from the airport. They replaced the old X1–X4 routes. Fares are €3, or €3.50 on TD1, paid in cash or by contactless card. Routes serve Valletta, Sliema, St Julian’s, Buġibba, Mellieħa and Ċirkewwa every 30 or 60 minutes.

Getting to Gozo

For Gozo, take the Gozo Channel ferry from Ċirkewwa, about 25 minutes, or the fast ferry from Valletta, about 45 minutes. Private transfers from the airport to Gozo cost about €40–95.
