Malpensa Terminal 1 or Terminal 2?
Malpensa has two terminals. Terminal 1 handles most scheduled and long-haul flights; Terminal 2 is used mainly by easyJet. Both have their own railway station on the Malpensa Express line, and a free shuttle bus links the two terminals. Trains start at Terminal 2 and call at Terminal 1 a few minutes later, so journeys from T2 take about 5–6 minutes longer. Since 22 January 2026 the coach area at Terminal 1 has moved to Level -1, next to the railway station and the Sheraton hotel.
Malpensa Express: train from Malpensa to Milan
The Malpensa Express is run by Trenord and is the most popular way into the city. There are two routes, each with about two trains an hour:
- To Milano Cadorna – via Busto Arsizio, Saronno and Milano Bovisa, about 37–38 minutes from Terminal 1 (about 44 minutes from Terminal 2). Cadorna is in the west of the centre, with metro lines M1 and M2 and a 15-minute walk to Castello Sforzesco and Brera.
- To Milano Centrale – via Milano Porta Garibaldi, about 50–55 minutes from Terminal 1. Choose this for hotels around Centrale, Porta Nuova and Isola, and for onward high-speed trains.
Combined, trains leave roughly every 15 minutes. Trenord lists the first departures from the airport at about 05:20 (T2) and 05:26 (T1) and the last at about 00:20 (T2) and 00:26 (T1). For the Duomo, either take the Cadorna train and change to metro M1, or the Centrale train and change to M3.
Malpensa Express ticket prices
A single ticket between Malpensa and any Milan station costs €15 for adults and €7.50 for children aged 4–13; children under 4 travel free with a paying adult. A 30-day return is sold online from €25, and the return date can be changed. Buy tickets from the machines and ticket office in the airport station, on the Trenord app or on the Malpensa Express website, and validate a paper ticket before boarding. The airport confirms you can pay by credit or debit card.
Trains have luggage racks and step-free access from the platforms. Italian rail strikes are announced in advance and usually guarantee a few services; check the Trenord strike page if your arrival falls on a strike day.
Malpensa airport bus to Milano Centrale
Several coach companies run between Malpensa and Milano Centrale, giving a departure roughly every 20 minutes for most of the day. Coaches pick up at the new bus area on Level -1 of Terminal 1 and also stop at Terminal 2.
- Terravision – non-stop to Centrale, every 30 minutes, about 50 minutes. Online fares from €4 one way and €8 return for adults; children aged 5–12 pay €5.
- Malpensa Shuttle (Air Pullman) – €10 one way, €16 return, €5 for children aged 2–12. Some departures run in the small hours.
- Malpensa Bus Express (Autostradale) and Caronte – also run regular services to Centrale.
Buses arrive at the side of Milano Centrale, close to metro lines M2 and M3. Journey times depend on traffic on the A8 motorway and in the city; allow over an hour at peak times. Coaches are the cheapest option and have plenty of hold space for luggage, but they are slower and less predictable than the train. Up-to-date operators and timetables are on the Malpensa airport coach page.
Malpensa taxi fare to Milan city centre
Milan taxis are white and wait at the official ranks outside arrivals at both terminals. The City of Milan sets fixed fares for airport trips, in both directions:
- Malpensa – Milan (any address in the city): €114
- Malpensa – Fiera Milano (Rho): €94
- Malpensa – Linate Airport: €128
- Malpensa – Varese: €80
No surcharges may be added: the fixed fare already covers motorway tolls, luggage and night or holiday supplements. The fare is per car, not per person, for up to the number of seats in the vehicle. Expect around 50–70 minutes depending on traffic; Friday evenings and weekday rush hours are the slowest. Taxis must accept card payment, but check the card reader before you set off. Fares are published by the Comune di Milano.
Uber and ride-hailing at Malpensa
Uber operates in Milan mainly through licensed chauffeur cars (NCC) and taxis rather than private drivers. Prices are dynamic, so compare the quote in the app with the €114 fixed taxi fare before booking; at busy times the taxi is often the cheaper and quicker option. App pick-ups use the designated pick-up areas outside arrivals rather than the taxi rank.
Pre-booked private transfers from Malpensa
For two people travelling light the train is hard to beat. A pre-booked transfer (in Italy usually an NCC, or “noleggio con conducente”, vehicle) is often worth it when:
- You are a family or group of five or more and need a minivan.
- You land late, after the last trains, or your flight is likely to be delayed.
- You need child seats fitted in advance.
- You have lots of luggage, ski bags or sports equipment.
- You are going beyond Milan – Lake Como, Lake Maggiore, Lugano or the mountains – where there is no fixed taxi fare.
- You want a fixed price, a name sign in arrivals and flight tracking.
Compare companies serving the airport on our Malpensa Airport (MXP) transfers hub, or see operators across the city on the Milan transfers page. Companies listed for the area include MilanobyCar, Danilo NCC, Lake of Como Transfers, Taxi Bellagio NCC and Lugano Transfer. You book directly with the company, so confirm the price, vehicle type, waiting time and terminal in writing.

Tips for arriving at Milan Malpensa
- Night arrivals: the last Malpensa Express leaves around 00:20–00:26. After that, a few coaches run through the night; otherwise take a taxi at the €114 fixed fare or arrange a transfer in advance.
- Use official taxis only: take white taxis from the rank or a car you have pre-booked. Ignore drivers offering rides inside the arrivals hall.
- Check the fixed fare: €114 to any address in Milan with no extras. If a driver turns on the meter for a city trip, remind them of the fixed fare.
- Payment: train tickets, most coach tickets and taxis can be paid by card. Keep a little cash for small purchases.
- Tipping: not expected in Italy. Rounding up is a polite extra for help with bags.
- Right terminal on the way back: check whether you fly from T1 or T2 before you board the train or tell your driver.
- Peak traffic: the A8 and the ring roads are busiest on weekday mornings and Friday afternoons; the train is the most reliable option at these times.
