Metro, Havaist bus, taxi or private transfer? Current 2026 fares and journey times from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Taksim, Sultanahmet and the rest of the city, plus tips for night arrivals.
The quickest way to get from Istanbul Airport to the city centre is the M11 metro to Gayrettepe and then the M2 to Taksim, which takes about 50–60 minutes for the price of two public transport fares. The easiest door-to-door option is a Havaist airport bus to Taksim (470 TL, about €8.50, in September 2026) or a taxi at roughly 2,000–2,600 TL (about €36–47) on the meter. For a fixed price with a driver waiting at arrivals, compare pre-booked Istanbul Airport transfers.

Istanbul Airport (IST) sits near the Black Sea coast, about 40 km by road from Taksim and around 50 km from Sultanahmet. Traffic matters more than distance here: the same taxi ride can take 45 minutes at 6am and well over an hour on a weekday evening.
Istanbul Airport metro (M11) to the city
The M11 line links the airport with Gayrettepe in the business district. Trains run at up to 120 km/h, so the ride to Gayrettepe takes around 30–35 minutes regardless of road traffic. In June 2026 the western section to Halkalı and Arnavutköy opened, completing the line, which is useful if you are heading to Halkalı for Marmaray trains.
Istanbul Airport metro to Taksim
At Gayrettepe, change to the M2 line (direction Yenikapı) and ride four stops to Taksim, about 10 minutes. Including the transfer walk, allow 50–60 minutes from the platform at the airport to Taksim Square.
Istanbul Airport metro to Sultanahmet
For the Old City, stay on the M2 past Taksim to Vezneciler and walk about 15 minutes, or get off at Taksim, take the F1 funicular down to Kabataş and the T1 tram to Sultanahmet. Expect around 75–90 minutes in total, with three changes, which is tiring with heavy bags.
Tickets and Istanbulkart
Follow the Metro signs from arrivals down to the transportation level below the terminal. Buy an Istanbulkart (the city’s rechargeable travel card) from the ticket machines at the station and load enough credit for both trains. Since February 2026 the standard full fare in the city is 42 TL per trip with an Istanbulkart, but boarding at the airport station is charged at a higher rate, so top up generously; a single card can be shared by several people, tapped once per person. Single-use paper tickets also exist (60 TL for one city ride) but an Istanbulkart works out cheaper if you will use public transport during your stay.
Stations have lifts, but expect long walks and escalators at Gayrettepe. The metro is a good choice in the morning rush, when buses and taxis are stuck on the motorway.
Havaist bus from Istanbul Airport to Taksim and Sultanahmet
Havaist is the airport’s dedicated coach service with 11 routes into the city. Buses leave from the transportation floor (level -2) below the arrivals hall; follow the bus signs and look for the line number on the bay. Coaches have luggage holds, and accessible midibuses are available for wheelchair users if you ask at the Havaist counters on the transportation floor at least an hour before you want to travel.
Havaist fares 2026
Fares were raised during 2026. The tariff published in September 2026 lists:
- HVL-9 Istanbul Airport – Taksim: 470 TL (≈ €8.50)
- HVL-11 Istanbul Airport – Sultanahmet: 420 TL (≈ €7.60)
- HVL-12 Istanbul Airport – Beyazıt: 370 TL (≈ €6.70)
- HVL-5 Istanbul Airport – Levent – Beşiktaş: 405 TL (≈ €7.30)
- HVL-6 Istanbul Airport – Kadıköy: 515 TL (≈ €9.30)
- HVL-1 Istanbul Airport – Aksaray: 470 TL (≈ €8.50)
Pay by contactless bank card on board or by QR code through the Havaist app. The Taksim line runs most frequently; Sultanahmet departures are further apart, so check the timetable in the Havaist app before you land. Journey times depend almost entirely on traffic: about an hour to Taksim off-peak, up to 90 minutes or more at rush hour.
IETT city buses
Five IETT city bus lines also serve the airport from the same level -2 area, at the normal flat bus fare (84 TL in 2026). The most useful for visitors is H-2 to Mecidiyeköy, where you can change to the metrobus or M2 metro. These are ordinary city buses without luggage holds, so they suit travellers with backpacks rather than big suitcases.
Istanbul Airport taxi fare to the city centre
Taxis wait 24/7 at the taxi stands outside the arrivals exits; the airport’s taxi page lists the stands. Three types operate from the airport, all on a taximeter regulated by the city’s transport authority (UKOME):
- Orange/yellow taxis (C): the standard tariff.
- Turquoise taxis (D): larger vehicles, about 15% more than the standard tariff.
- Black luxury taxis (E): premium vehicles, about 70% more than the standard tariff.
How much is a taxi from Istanbul Airport to Taksim?
Istanbul’s standard taxi tariff rose by 10% on 20 July 2026 to 71.94 TL on starting, 47.92 TL per km and 230 TL minimum. On that tariff, the roughly 40 km to Taksim comes to about 2,000 TL in free-flowing traffic and 2,300–2,600 TL when the meter switches to time charging in jams (≈ €36–47). Sultanahmet, around 50 km away, is typically 2,400–3,000 TL (≈ €43–54). A turquoise or black taxi costs proportionally more.
Make sure the meter is switched on when you set off. Motorway and bridge tolls are added to the fare; there is no bridge to cross for Taksim or Sultanahmet, but the Asian side (Kadıköy, Üsküdar) involves a toll, and drivers using the Eurasia Tunnel also add the return bridge toll. Many drivers accept cards, but carry some lira in case the card terminal “isn’t working”.
Uber and taxi apps at Istanbul Airport
Uber works in Istanbul, but it dispatches licensed yellow, turquoise or black taxis rather than private cars, so you pay the meter fare plus any booking fee shown in the app. The local app BiTaksi works the same way. The benefit is a tracked route and a record of the driver, not a lower price. Pick-up happens from the official taxi area, and at busy times the wait can be longer than simply joining the taxi queue.
Pre-booked private transfers from Istanbul Airport
A private transfer is booked before you fly, at a fixed price agreed in advance. The driver tracks your flight, meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign and takes you straight to your hotel. In Istanbul this is worth considering when:
- you are a family or group of four or more, where a minivan for everyone often costs less per person than two taxis;
- you land late at night and do not want to work out buses or bargain over luggage;
- you need child seats, which regular taxis rarely carry;
- you have skis, golf bags, prams or several large suitcases;
- you want a fixed price that does not change if traffic is bad on the motorway.
Compare operators on our Istanbul Airport transfers page and book directly with the company. Local companies listed on intransfers.com include Kings World Transfer, Merry Tourism Istanbul, Istanbul Transfer Service, Istanbul Shuttle and Cab Istanbul. For trips around town after you arrive, see all Istanbul transfer companies.
When booking, confirm the total price, what is included (waiting time if your flight is late, tolls, child seats), and the vehicle size for your luggage.
Getting from Istanbul Airport to other places
Istanbul Airport to Sabiha Gökçen Airport
The two airports are on opposite sides of the Bosphorus, around 90 km apart. Havaist line HVL-10 connects them for 530 TL (≈ €9.60); allow at least 1.5–2 hours. A taxi costs several times more and also pays the bridge toll. Transfer companies covering the Asian side are on our Sabiha Gökçen Airport transfers page.
Istanbul Airport to Galataport cruise port
Galataport in Karaköy is a short ride from Taksim and Beşiktaş. Without luggage, take the Havaist to Taksim or Beşiktaş and a short taxi from there. Cruise passengers with bags usually find a direct taxi or transfer simpler; see Galataport cruise port transfers.
Istanbul Airport to Kadıköy
Havaist HVL-6 runs to Kadıköy for 515 TL (≈ €9.30), usually 1.5 hours or more as it crosses the Bosphorus. A taxi includes the bridge toll on top of the meter.
Tips for arriving at Istanbul Airport
- Night arrivals: taxis and pre-booked transfers run around the clock. If you plan to use the metro or Havaist after 11pm, check the last departure in the Havaist app or at the metro station before relying on it.
- Unlicensed drivers: ignore anyone offering a ride inside the terminal. Use the official taxi stands on the arrivals level, a taxi app, or a transfer you booked in advance.
- Check the meter: make sure it starts from the opening fare and the taxi type matches the colour of the car. Ask for the fare before loading luggage if the meter is not visible.
- Cash and cards: Havaist and the metro accept contactless cards; taxis often do, but keep some lira for tolls and small payments. ATMs are in the arrivals hall.
- Tipping: rounding up a taxi fare is normal; 5–10% is generous for a driver who helps with heavy luggage.
- Peak traffic: weekday mornings (7–10am) and evenings (5–8pm) are the slowest on the roads. At those times, the M11 metro is the most predictable option.
- Prices change: Turkish fares are revised often because of inflation. Treat the lira figures here as a guide and check before you travel.
