Where cruise ships dock in Valletta
Malta’s cruise terminal is the Valletta Cruise Port at the Valletta Waterfront, on the Grand Harbour below the city walls (technically in Floriana). Ships berth alongside the Pinto Wharf quays, numbered Pinto 1 to Pinto 5, and passengers walk straight off along the Waterfront promenade. The Forni Stores building houses the cruise passenger terminal, and the historic Pinto Stores line the quay, with restaurants, cafés and shops along the Waterfront promenade. Ships normally dock alongside, so tendering is rare here.
The Waterfront has a taxi and tour booking office on the promenade, a bus stop called “Waterfront” and sightseeing bus booths. Valletta’s centre is about 1.2 km away and around 50 metres higher, which is why most passengers use the lift or a bus rather than walking up the hill.
Valletta cruise terminal to the city: Upper Barrakka Lift
The Barrakka Lift links Lascaris Wharf on the harbour with the Upper Barrakka Gardens in central Valletta. It is about 500 metres from the cruise terminal along the waterfront, directly opposite the ferry landing for the Three Cities.
- Fare: €1 for a return trip. Children under 10 travel free, as do holders of a valid harbour ferry ticket from the Three Cities to Valletta.
- Hours: 07:00–21:00 from 1 November to 31 May, and 07:00–midnight from 1 June to 31 October.
- Ride: 58 metres in about 25 seconds – much easier than the stairs with a pushchair or tired legs.
At the top you arrive in the Upper Barrakka Gardens, with the view over the Grand Harbour and the Saluting Battery. From there it is a few minutes on foot to Republic Street, St John’s Co-Cathedral and the City Gate. Fares and hours are set by Transport Malta.
Valletta cruise port bus: route 130 and onward routes
Malta Public Transport route 130 runs between the Valletta Waterfront stop and the Valletta bus terminus outside City Gate, saving the climb. The standard day fare is €2 in the winter fare period and €2.50 in summer, paid on board by cash or contactless and valid for two hours including changes. From the Valletta terminus, buses go all over Malta, including routes to Sliema, St Julian’s and Mdina. Pay attention to the “Waterfront” stop name when returning to the ship.
Valletta cruise port to Malta Airport
Airport Direct bus TD4
The limited-stop TD4 starts at the Valletta terminus, stops at Lascaris (by the Gozo fast ferry terminal, a short walk from the cruise terminal) and then runs non-stop to Malta International Airport. It runs every 30 minutes until around midnight, the fare is €3 per person paid on board by cash or contactless, and the trip takes around 20–30 minutes. Airport Direct buses have more luggage space than ordinary routes, but on a busy disembarkation morning a bus can fill quickly. Timetables are on the Malta Public Transport Airport Direct page.
Taxi from the cruise terminal to the airport
Licensed white taxis serve the Waterfront, and there is a taxi booking office on the promenade that quotes established rates. The airport publishes a fixed fare of €17 per vehicle from the airport to Valletta or the Cruise Terminal, excluding an unstated administrative fee, plus a €4.50 surcharge on 25 December and 1 January. No fixed fare is published for the opposite direction, so agree the price before you get in; it is usually similar. Ride-hailing apps Bolt, Uber and eCabs also operate in Malta with private hire cars, with prices that change with demand.
For full details of arriving at the airport, including the taxi booth and all bus routes, see our Malta Airport to Valletta, Sliema and St Julian’s guide.
Timing your flight
Malta is compact: the airport is only around 15–20 minutes from the Grand Harbour by road. Disembarkation still takes time, as passengers leave in groups and collect their cases from the terminal. Traffic around Marsa and Floriana can be heavy at weekday rush hours. Many cruise passengers choose flights from late morning onwards, and a pre-booked driver who knows your disembarkation group is the most predictable option.
Embarkation day: Malta Airport to the cruise terminal
If you are joining a ship in Malta, the trip from the airport is short and simple. At the airport, buy a ticket for “Valletta Cruise Terminal” at the pre-paid white taxi booth in the Welcomers’ Hall – the fixed fare is €17 per car, plus the administrative fee – and hand it to the driver at the rank. Alternatively, take TD4 towards Valletta and get off at Lascaris, then walk along the harbour to the terminal; this works well with one suitcase each but less well with several. Check your cruise line’s boarding time before you leave the airport: terminal facilities are limited before check-in opens, so an early flight may leave you waiting. Arriving the day before and staying in Valletta or Sliema removes the risk of a delayed flight.
Pre-booked private transfers from Valletta Cruise Port
Because the airport is so close, a pre-booked transfer is less about distance and more about convenience. It is worth considering when:
- you are a group of five or more and need a minivan or minibus, rather than two taxis;
- you have heavy cruise luggage, children who need car seats, or mobility aids;
- you are going to a hotel in Sliema, St Julian’s, Buġibba or Mellieħa, or across to Gozo, before or after the cruise;
- you want a private island tour on a port day with a driver who knows your all-aboard time.

Day trips from Valletta cruise port
Three Cities by harbour ferry
Valletta Ferry Services runs a harbour ferry from the landing below the Barrakka Lift across the Grand Harbour to Cospicua (Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua are the Three Cities), roughly every 30 minutes in the daytime. Singles cost around €1.50, and a ferry ticket from Cospicua includes the lift up into Valletta.
Sliema ferry
The Sliema ferry leaves from the Marsamxett side of Valletta, on the other side of the peninsula. Bus route 133 links the city with the ferry quay, and a free shuttle between Marsamxetto and Lascaris is timed to ferry departures. The crossing is short and fares are around €1.50 single. See Sliema transfers.
Mdina and Rabat
The walled former capital is in the centre of the island, around 20–30 minutes by car. Allow two to three hours for Mdina and neighbouring Rabat. Buses run from the Valletta terminus.
Gozo
The Gozo Highspeed fast ferry sails from Lascaris Wharf, a short walk from the cruise terminal, to Mġarr in around 45 minutes, with adult singles around €7.50. It is a long day for a port call, so check the return sailing against your all-aboard time. See Gozo transfers.
Tips for Valletta cruise passengers
- Use the lift, not the hill: the walk up from the Waterfront is steep and unshaded in summer; the €1 lift saves the climb.
- Check winter lift hours: from 1 November the lift closes at 21:00, which matters for late all-aboard times.
- Pay by contactless on buses: tap a card or phone on board; carry some coins for the lift as a backup.
- Agree taxi fares first: fixed fares are published from the airport; for other trips confirm the price before you leave.
- Tipping: not expected; rounding up for help with bags is appreciated.
- Allow for traffic: the roads around Floriana and Marsa are congested at rush hour – leave extra time on disembarkation day.
