Where cruise ships dock in Dubrovnik
Most cruise ships tie up at the port of Gruž, the city’s main passenger harbour about 3 km north-west of the walled Old Town. The cruise quays stretch along the bay, so from some berths it is a walk of several minutes to the passenger terminal and the main road. The main bus station sits right beside the port, which matters for the airport shuttle and for longer bus trips.
Some ships, especially at busy times, anchor off the city and take passengers ashore by tender instead. Depending on the ship and conditions, tenders may land in Gruž or at the small Old Town harbour, which puts you directly at the walls; your ship’s daily programme will say which. Tendering adds around 20–30 minutes at each end of the day, so allow for it when you plan an excursion or the return to the ship.
Since 2019 the city has limited cruise calls to two ships a day and around 5,000 cruise passengers a day, and works with cruise lines to spread arrival times. Even so, the Old Town is crowded between late morning and mid-afternoon when two large ships are in.
Gruž port to Old Town by bus (Libertas)
The city bus company Libertas runs the cheapest link between the port and Pile Gate, the main western entrance to the Old Town. Lines 1A and 1B and line 3 connect the Gruž area with Pile; line 8 also serves Gruž and runs towards the cable car area. Stops are along the main road by the port and the bus station. The ride takes around 10–20 minutes depending on traffic, and buses are frequent in the cruise season, with fewer departures in winter and on Sundays.
- Single ticket bought from the driver: €2.50.
- Ticket bought in advance (at kiosks): around €1.73, valid one hour after validation.
- Day ticket: €5.31, valid 24 hours from first validation – worth it if you will ride three or more times.
Prices are on the Libertas price list. Validate your ticket when you board. On busy cruise days buses from Gruž fill quickly in the morning and from Pile in the afternoon, so leave a margin before all-aboard time.
Cruise line shuttle buses
Many cruise lines run their own shuttle buses between the ship and a drop-off point near the Old Town. Some premium lines include it in the fare; others charge per person for a return ticket, and a few offer none. Check the price, the drop-off point and the time of the last shuttle back in your ship’s daily programme. If the shuttle is paid, the Libertas bus is usually much cheaper for one or two people.
Dubrovnik cruise port taxi and Bolt
Taxis wait outside the port when ships are in. Croatian taxi firms set their own tariffs and there is no official fixed fare from Gruž to the Old Town, so ask for the price or confirm the meter before you get in. Short rides between Gruž and Pile typically cost around €10–€15 in normal traffic. Cars cannot enter the Old Town itself, so you will be dropped at Pile or Ploče Gate.
Uber and Bolt both operate in Dubrovnik. Bolt’s route estimates for the 3.4 km between the Old Town and Gruž port are around €9–€13 depending on the category, with a journey of about 12 minutes; prices rise with demand. In July and August the road between Gruž and Pile can be slow, and the trip can take 30 minutes.
Dubrovnik cruise port to the airport
Dubrovnik Airport is at Čilipi, about 22 km south-east of the city. On disembarkation day you have three main options:
- Platanus airport shuttle: leaves from platform 8 at the main bus station next to the port, calls at Grawe and at the cable car stop above the Old Town, and reaches the airport in about 35 minutes from the bus station. Departures are timed to flights, from the first morning flight to the last at night. Fares are €10 one way and €15 return, children under 6 free, one suitcase included. Buy online or at the bus station or cable car office – not on board – and be at the stop at least 10 minutes early. Check the Platanus timetable, which changes in the October–December shoulder season.
- Taxi or app ride: around 30–40 minutes from Gruž; expect a fare similar to the airport–Old Town range of around €40–€60, as there is no official tariff.
- Pre-booked transfer: a driver meets you at the ship or terminal at an agreed time and price.

Timing your flight
Disembarkation in Dubrovnik usually runs through the early morning in groups. Add time to collect luggage, the transfer itself, and summer traffic on the coast road out of the city. Allow at least two hours at the airport before departure in peak season, when security queues build. Many cruise passengers avoid flights before late morning; a pre-booked driver who knows your ship’s arrival time removes the worry about taxi queues.
Pre-booked private transfers from Dubrovnik cruise port
Pre-booking makes most sense in Dubrovnik on embarkation and disembarkation days and for day trips across a border. It is worth considering when:
- you are flying home the same day and want a fixed time and fixed price rather than a taxi queue;
- you have several large suitcases, travel with children who need car seats, or are a group that would need two taxis;
- you are joining the ship after a night in Lapad, Cavtat or Montenegro;
- you want a private day trip to Kotor, Mostar or Ston with a driver who watches the all-aboard time.
Local companies in our directory include Transfers Dubrovnik, Day Trip Dubrovnik (Taxi Mata), Adria Luxury Travel Dubrovnik and M-Dub Dubrovnik Private Transfers. Contact the company directly and confirm what is included – waiting time at the port, luggage, child seats and any border costs.
Day trips from Dubrovnik cruise port
Old Town, walls and cable car
Most passengers spend the day in the Old Town: the city walls, Stradun and the harbour. The Srđ cable car station is just above the Old Town (the Platanus stop is next to it) and gives views over the walls and islands. Go early or late in the day to avoid the midday peak when two ships are in.
Cavtat
The small harbour town of Cavtat lies south of the city, close to the airport – around 30 minutes by road from Gruž outside peak traffic. Libertas line 10 runs there from Dubrovnik (€4.00 single), and a taxi or driver makes it an easy half day. See Cavtat transfers.
Kotor, Montenegro
Kotor is a popular full-day trip, but it means crossing the Croatia–Montenegro border, which is an external Schengen border with full passport checks. Allow around 2–2.5 hours each way, and much longer if the queue is bad in summer. Only do it with a driver or tour that understands your all-aboard time. See Kotor transfers.
Mostar and Ston
Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina is around 2.5–3 hours each way with a border crossing – a long day for a port call. Ston, known for its walls and oysters, is closer, around an hour up the coast. See Mostar transfers.
Tips for Dubrovnik cruise passengers
- Buy bus tickets in advance: pre-bought tickets are cheaper than paying the driver, and a day ticket covers several trips.
- Allow for traffic: the road from Pile back to Gruž is slow in the afternoon in July and August. Head back at least an hour before all-aboard.
- Check the landing point: on tender days you may land in the Old Town harbour rather than Gruž, which changes how you return.
- Agree taxi prices: there is no official fare from the port; confirm the price or the meter first, and ask whether cards are accepted.
- Carry ID for border trips: passports are required for Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
- Tipping: not required; rounding up is common.
