Southampton Cruise Port to Heathrow, Gatwick & London: 2026 Guide

Updated · 8 min read

How to get from Southampton's five cruise terminals to Heathrow, Gatwick and central London: National Express coach fares, trains to Waterloo, taxis, pre-booked transfers and disembarkation-day timing.

The quickest way from Southampton cruise port to Heathrow is by road: around 68 miles, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes in normal traffic, which is why most cruise passengers with luggage take a pre-booked car or minibus. The cheapest is the National Express coach from Southampton Coach Station, from £17.40 (≈€20) and about 1 hour 40 minutes to Heathrow Central, while South Western Railway trains from Southampton Central reach London Waterloo in around 1 hour 15–1 hour 30 minutes. To compare drivers who meet you at the terminal, see our Southampton transfers page.

Where cruise ships dock in Southampton: the five terminals

The Port of Southampton has five cruise terminals in two dock areas, and the terminal on your booking decides which gate your driver or taxi uses:

  • Eastern Docks – Ocean and QEII terminals: reached through Dock Gate 4. Ocean Cruise Terminal is just past the security barrier; QEII is further along, about a 5-minute drive or 20-minute walk.
  • Western Docks – City, Horizon and Mayflower terminals: reached through Dock Gate 10. After the barrier, City is to the left, Mayflower to the right and Horizon straight ahead.

Every terminal has a baggage hall, a drop-off lane, porters for checked luggage and a taxi rank outside. There are toilets and vending machines but no cafés, so arriving very early is not encouraged; your cruise line gives you a check-in time. Southampton Central station is about 2 miles from the terminals, roughly 6 minutes by taxi. On foot it is around 15 minutes to City and Horizon and about 30 minutes to Mayflower and Ocean; QEII is too far to walk with luggage.

Southampton cruise terminal to Heathrow by coach (National Express)

National Express route 032 links Southampton Coach Station with Heathrow, calling at the University of Southampton and Winchester Park & Ride on the way. At Heathrow it stops at Heathrow Central Bus Station (Terminals 2 and 3) and outside Terminals 4 and 5.

  • Fare: from £17.40 (≈€20) one way, including a £1.50 booking fee that is waived when you book through a National Express account. This fare is quoted for travel up to 11 January 2027 and seats at that price are limited.
  • Journey time: the fastest coaches take about 1 hour 40 minutes to Heathrow Central.
  • Times: the first departure is around 02:05 and the last around 20:30. National Express quotes different daily totals on the same page, so check the National Express Southampton–Heathrow page for your date.
  • Luggage: the standard allowance is one large suitcase (or two medium cases) plus one small soft bag. Cruise luggage for two weeks often exceeds that.

The coach does not stop at the cruise terminals. Southampton Coach Station is about 10–15 minutes on foot from City and Horizon, about 15 minutes more from Mayflower, and at least 30 minutes from Ocean and QEII, so most passengers take a short taxi to the coach station.

Southampton cruise to London by train

South Western Railway runs frequent trains from Southampton Central to London Waterloo, with roughly 60 or more departures a day. The fastest take around 1 hour 15–20 minutes; stopping services take closer to 1 hour 45 minutes. Trains call at Southampton Airport Parkway, Winchester, Basingstoke and Woking on the way. The first trains leave before 04:00 and the last around midnight.

Advance singles booked ahead start from around £10 (≈€12), but walk-up Anytime and Off-Peak fares cost considerably more, so book once your disembarkation day is fixed. Off-peak restrictions apply to trains arriving in London in the morning rush. From Waterloo, the Jubilee, Northern, Bakerloo and Waterloo & City lines connect across central London.

To reach the station from the ship, take a taxi from the rank outside your terminal (about 6 minutes). MSC has offered a luggage drop at Southampton Central on selected sailings for £3 per bag, charged to the onboard account – check whether your line has a similar service.

Southampton to Heathrow by train

There is no direct train from Southampton to Heathrow. The usual rail route is a South Western Railway train to Woking, then the RailAir RA2 coach from Woking station to Heathrow Terminals 2, 3 and 5. Another option is a train to Reading and the RailAir RA1 coach, which runs every 20 minutes. Combined tickets are not necessarily cheaper than separate ones, and with two changes and cruise luggage, the direct coach or a car is usually simpler. Our guide to Heathrow Airport to central London covers onward connections from Heathrow.

Southampton to Gatwick

Gatwick is about 91 miles from the port, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes by car. There is no direct train from Southampton Central to Gatwick: journeys need at least one change and typically take around 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours, usually on South Western Railway and Southern services. National Express also runs coaches from Southampton Coach Station to Gatwick’s North and South Terminals, with departures from around 2am; check the timetable for times and fares on your date. For a car or minibus timed to your flight, see our Gatwick Airport transfers page.

Southampton cruise port taxi and Uber

Each terminal has a dedicated taxi rank, and on busy turnaround days a queue forms as several thousand passengers leave at once. Southampton’s licensed hackney carriages use a council-set metered tariff within the city, and no card surcharge is allowed. For journeys that leave the city, such as to Heathrow or Gatwick, the council advises agreeing the basis of the fare before you set off. Uber also operates in Southampton. For a long airport run, a fixed price booked in advance is usually more predictable than a metered or surge-priced ride.

Pre-booked private transfers from Southampton cruise port

Cruise passengers pre-book more often than airport travellers, because disembarkation is a fixed, crowded window and most people carry more luggage than a coach allows. A pre-booked car or minibus is worth considering when:

  • you have a flight the same day and want a driver waiting at the terminal as soon as you are off the ship, with a fixed price that does not change with traffic;
  • you are travelling as a family or group of four or more, where one vehicle replaces several coach fares;
  • you have large suitcases, formal wear or mobility aids, or need child seats;
  • you are arriving for embarkation from Heathrow or Gatwick after a long-haul flight and want to go straight to the terminal.

Give the operator your ship and terminal name, because the Eastern and Western Docks use different gates. Companies in our directory include Southampton Cruise Tours, viaUNO Cars Southampton and Clocktower Cars Gatwick. Compare more operators on our Southampton transfers and Heathrow Airport transfers pages, or browse London transfers if you are staying in the capital. You book directly with the company, so confirm what the price includes – waiting time, parking, and any airport drop-off charges.

Day trips from Southampton cruise port

  • Winchester: the cathedral city is a short train ride from Southampton Central on the London line, making it the easiest half-day trip before embarkation or on a turnaround day in port.
  • New Forest: the national park begins just west of the city; a car or tour is the practical way to see the villages and ponies on a short visit.
  • Salisbury and Stonehenge: around an hour by road. Many passengers book a driver or tour that combines Stonehenge with a drop at Heathrow or the terminal.
  • Southampton Airport: about 6 miles away, around 15 minutes by car; trains from Southampton Airport Parkway take about 8 minutes to Southampton Central and run every 10–15 minutes.

Disembarkation day: getting to Heathrow or Gatwick on time

Ships usually dock in the early morning and passengers leave in groups over several hours. Your colour or number group decides when you can go ashore, and it is often after breakfast. Allow time to collect your cases in the baggage hall and to queue for a taxi.

  • Plan the flight time: with around 1 hour 15 minutes to Heathrow in clear traffic, plus disembarkation and check-in, many cruise passengers choose flights from early afternoon onwards. For Gatwick, allow longer.
  • Watch the M3 and M25: weekday rush hours and summer weekends slow the motorway; a coach timetable of 1 hour 40 minutes can stretch further.
  • Self-disembark if you carry your own bags: many lines let passengers who carry all their luggage leave first, which helps with tight connections.
  • Keep the terminal name to hand: drivers and taxis need to know whether to use Dock Gate 4 or Dock Gate 10.

Tips for Southampton cruise passengers

  • Arriving the day before: if you fly into Heathrow or Gatwick from overseas, an overnight stay in Southampton or Winchester removes the risk of a delayed flight costing you the ship.
  • Book coaches and trains ahead: cheaper advance fares sell out, and turnaround Saturdays are busy.
  • Use licensed vehicles: take taxis from the terminal rank or a company you have booked; licensed private hire drivers carry a council badge.
  • Payment: coaches and trains are booked online; licensed Southampton taxis must not add a surcharge for card payment.
  • Tipping: not required; rounding up a taxi fare or tipping porters a few pounds is common.
  • Car parking: if you drive, official port parking and park-and-ride with shuttles to the terminals are available; book ahead.
